Why Africans have larger lips

Disclaimer to begin with. There is nothing racist about this post or the topic. Of course not all Africans have large lips and not all Caucasians have small lips and of course large and small are relative.

The question that is being addressed is, how come most African Americans have larger lips and a wider nose compared to, lets say white Americans.

In general, this pattern can be observed across the planet with the size of lips and nose decreasing as we move away from the equator towards the poles. So what could the reason be?

(Average) Lips and Nose across different races
Given the pattern, it is an easy guess that the size of lips and nose has got something to do with the climatic conditions and that humans have evolved to fit into their world. The reasoning goes as follows.

Lips: For someone living in hot climatic conditions, cooling down the body is critical for their survival. Our body has many cooling mechanisms and one of them is simply disseminating heat when it comes in contact with colder air (simple thermodynamics). This however requires larger surface area so that more heat can be disseminated.

Given that a significant portion of breathing also happens through the mouth (especially when exposed to heat), lips are pretty much like the gateway for colder air being inhaled and exhaled. So, the larger the lips, the more heat that can be disseminated. Thus, people living in hotter climatic conditions gradually evolved to have bigger lips.

The opposite is true for people in colder climates. They get a survival advantage if they are able to retain as much heat as possible and so they gradually evolved to have smaller lips thus limiting the amount of heat that can escape when cold air brushes past their lips while inhaling and exhaling.

Nose: Its pretty much for the same reason as with the lips. Nose is the most important part when it comes to contact with colder air and having a bigger surface area helps with cooling.

There is one other advantage with a wider nose though. Physical activity in a hotter climate is more demanding than when it is cool (because the body needs to spend some energy just for the cooling processes) and thus the body requires more oxygen. Having a wider nose and nostrils facilitates breathing in more air thereby supplying the body with more oxygen and thus giving a survival advantage in the evolutionary race.

    1. They do have these features to some extent. Most native American peoples (including Hispanic groups) have this feature. Many of Asia also have this, although it varies significantly from region to region, and the extremeness of the qualities also vary, its the same idea.

    2. if all those listed have it, why does this article specificalyl mentions africans?
which, in average, have larger lips and noses than any asian, native american, and hispanic groups would be those that have hispanic and native characteristics and these also don't have larger lips and noses.

Africa is the cradle of civilization. Someone asked white Mexicans or native Americans don't have similar features as africans....easy answer, give us 10 million years and as long as the gene pool isn't mixed.....the folks living closer to the equator will show those features. Native Americans came from asia, Hispanics are a recent mix between Spanish and native americans. Not enough time has passed to develop these features and we've made travel so efficient that gene pools are always mixing. With that last thought the world will probably all look the same in 50 million years.

The temperature there in the winter season drops to as low as -45 degrees celcius. Even rest of India is quite cool during the winters.

    14. The explanation given is based on pure speculation (body cooling), without any scientific basis (another speculation is lack of vitamin D). Scientist have never explained the reasons for, and the differences in, races. They doggedly cling to the supposition "we are all one species out of Africa" without answering the question "why are there so many different races of man"? About all we know now, is, our ancestors were Neanderthals, Denisovans, Modern Humans and perhaps many others.

    15. You are all wrong' you need to do more research on the subject. Many years ago people who lived in Africa had a tradition on lncerting saucers or bones info their nose and lips to stretch their skin. Over time and many generations their lips and noses grew in size. If you do more research on the internet you will find pictures of such tribes of people. When I was a kid I looked through the World Book Encyclopedia and it would have pictures of African's stretching their noses and lips. That's why they look like they do today. It's a form of evolution.

    18. Because Mexicans and South Americans are heavily mixed with Europeans (mostly Spaniards), therefore they can/will possess european features. For the people you speak about in South America to evolve again in a way that would change their more european attributes, it would require some evolutionary advantage for the change. For example, the first humans to theoretically develop attributes such as wide noses, large lips and dark skin spent time hunting outside in very hot climates, causing an advantageous reason for those changes to occur. It also took thousands of years for that to happen. Europeans went to South America just a few hundred years ago.

    1. Why use "Americans" at all? We should be referring to Europeans here, specifically Northern Europeans. It's not about countries at all but regions, and the impact climate has on evolution. Also there is great diversity within regions. A South Asian who lives in the Himalayas might have thinner lips to avoid frostbite and a South Indian might have thicker lips to disperse heat. Unless there's an abrupt geographical boundary (like an ocean or mountains) racial differences flow gradually from one region to the next. And don't forget migration, which mixes everything up. The first "Americans" crossed the Bering Straits during the last ice age and settled from what is now Alaska all the way to Chile. They were not white at all.

    8. I must disagree with the lip theory...because the size of someone's lips has nothing to do with how much air they can take in..

      Delete
    9. The issue of lip size is not about air intake or breathing. It is about surface area and temperature. Thinner lips are less prone to frostbite. Fuller lips allow more surface area to help release heat. We breathe primarily through our noses, which have also evolved to adapt to climate. A longer, narrower nose lets in less cold or dry air, while a broader one allows more intake of moist air. Many European features were actually inherited from Neanderthals, who inhabited the colder Northern regions before humans did. More recent genetic research seems to show that European humans intermarried with Neanderthals rather than killing them off: http:www.abroadintheyard.com/20-physical-traits-inherited-from-neanderthal/

I was the only daughter of my parents that was born in NYC, and also the one with the paler skin and a narrow nose.
My brothers and sisters all where raised in Mexico, and they live here now, but have tan skin naturally. My mother and father are both tan, and no one in my family has a narrow nose.
What I don't understand is I'm the only one in my ENTIRE family that has pale skin and narrow nose, I even have Light-Brown eye color.
So... Does this mean that even though my race is Mexican with tan skin, dark brown eyes, and a combo of indian/american nose If I was born in NYC, where the heat isn't much my skin would be pale, light brown eyes, and a narrow nose? I don't have ANY similarities of my siblings/parents except the eye shape, and my body height. This doesn't make sense. Basically my whole look changes because of the climate? BULL SHT. FKN SCIENCE.

Just as it states, the larger lips help keep the body cool, but as people began moving out of Africa and into the colder northern region, they no longer needed a large surface area to keep cool, and after years, and years of mating people with ancestors from the colder climates are still show casing the thinner lips.

    6. Your race isn't Mexican, lol. That's your nationality or your ethnicity. There are only 3 recognized races of human, and even that's a less accepted theory these days than when it was first introduced. Those 3 races are/were caucasoid, negroid, and mongoloid. White, black, and Asian. Hispanics are considered part of the White race - sorry, buddy, but it's true. You may be brown but you are classified as WHITE. So are Middle Easterners, as freaky as that sounds. All those BLACK skinned Indians are, yup, WHITE! Well, not White exactly, but Caucasian. In fact, the word caucasoid comes from the Middle Eastern region of the Caucasus Mountains. So it can be theorized that TRUE Whites, since we now associate 'White' with 'Caucasian', came from that region and are Middle Easterners. Which brings me to my next point: caucasoid/Caucasian doesn't mean White, as in European White. It means White as in Caucasian White. This is where it gets confusing. A White is never called a Caucasian whereas a Caucasian can be called a White. The Caucasian race actually consists of North Africans, Arabs, Whites, Somalians, some people in India and Ethiopians. Not 100% true.
First, "Hispanics are considered part of the White race", Untrue. Race In the Americas (Central, South-America, the Caribbean, the USA and Canada) is fluid. Most Hispanics are a mix of Indigenous peoples, Africans, and Europeans (mainly Spanish and Portuguese). A
Hispanic that looks white (self-identifies as white) is usually a person of 2 or more of the 3 racial groups that happens to look "white". If Obama's wife was white, his children would most likely look and be considered "white" (They would be only 25% African & 75% European, 1/3 of White Americans have African-American linage). Consider these "white" looking actors Rashida Jones (half black/white), or Wentworth Miller (half black/white), and the late Phyllis Diller (half black/white).
"Race" is a social construct and is not an absolute since a Caucasian person can have a non-caucasian looking child/grandchild and a non-Caucasian can have a Caucasian looking child/ grandchild.
DNA is the only real measure of of ethnic background.

      https://sociology.stanford.edu/publications/racial-fluidity-and-inequality-united-states
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Americans#Admixture

Indians like many people are not homogeneous. Like you said in your own post there is a difference between ethnicity and nationality. Indian is a country not a race and is comprised of numerous ethnic groups all of which are not considered "Caucasoid". Northern Indians are considered Caucasian due to the high prevalence of a equine noses, and the shape of their skull. However Southern Indians have a higher presence of a wider shorter nose, and prominent brow ridge. The science behind the Phrenology approach largely leaves out Genetic evidence. Southern Asians (South India, Sri Lanka) have less European admixture and share a lineage with Aborigines whom left the Sub-continent thousands of years ago. This group is as unique as the antiquated Mongoloid, Negroid, Caucasoid racial groupings used in the 1920's.

  10. Humans started off with one race and a common habitation. Later migrations to different parts of the world with different climatic conditions meant that the genetic composition of the body which was the same for all migrants changed over a long period of time in order to be be able to adapt to the different environments that they eventually settled in. The extreme cases account for habitations in a particular area over a long period of time while mild cases could be down to those who stayed in conditions that were optimal for preserving the original composition or recent re-migrations (of probably a few hundred years depending on the severity of the conditions) from one area to another causing extremes to mingle to bring forth a middle ground composition, which may also account for the cohabitants that do not have a composition characteristic of the surrounding environment. And yes some folk are bound to have an advantage over others in certain circumstances if the conditions suit their altered composition more than others and this is just so that the Human Race can be preserved and continued. So it is indeed very possible that the original composition may well have been somewhere in between what we may regard as extremes in physical features which can also be backed up by what is brought forth when extremes mingle. I hope this does make sense without having to be plainly outright in description.

    2. Hey there,
Africa was the cradle of homo sapiens evolution. Because we as a species have been in Africa the longest (time wise) and because human populations in Africa have for the most part been larger than anywhere else in the world (for most of evolutionary history) there is far greater genetic diversity within African populations than within any other populations, which also means greater phenotypic variation. So, it's not surprising at that Africans display almost every possible physical characteristic.... Skin color, lip, nose, height, hair type anything... Because Africa contains so much genetic variation! Now think of Northern European populations. Not only is this a smaller continent, it has been populated by humans for less time and by a smaller group of humans than in Africa (for most of evolutionary history) therefore there is less variation in appearance in these populations. Angelina Jolie is maybe an exception but full lips in white Europeans are rarer I'd say than thin lips in Africans... Just because there's less genetic variation within the European population to allow for so many different possible phenotypic expressions as we see in Africans.

when evolutionary anthropologists try to explain characteristics like these, we often describe a gradient spreading outward from the equator to the poles. Now think of Africa as compared to Europe or Asia. Africa is much longer from pole to pole whereas Asia and Europe are both wider across the globe. So Africa encompasses a huge portion of that pole to equator gradient. (north and South America are generally not spoken of the same way because humans migrated to these continents relatively recently)

Is it also possible that larger lips stand out more on darker facial skin? As lips are a courting arousal physical feature.
Climate change has shown that species can change quite drastically during short time frames.
Whilst homosapiens evolved in Africa, which was quite different at the time, they also mixed with neanderthal and possibly other humanids. It is refreshing that by science we uncover a less stereotypical early humans capable of much more than grunts.
We must find a language where we can discuss our cultural and racial differences without fear and thus celebrate our diversity. Hopefully within our lifetime we may yet understand the full story of our kind, incidentally the only kind capable of wiping out most of life on earth.
there was a documentary series about other humanid characteristics and evolution: about eyesight, hand development and how our walk is a controlled fall.

  22. This isnt 100% accurate. First let's be more scientific and remove the term race as race is mainly a phenotype based clasification. Also most of thes features are scattered throughout all "races" and are not exclusive to one group.

    The nose:
If you examine the noses of indigenous peoples that live in hot climates (Aborigines, West/central/south Africa, Parts of south-east Asia) you will find a nose that is wider (circular nostrils). Circular nostrils allows for maximum distance between the nasal linings. The nasal linings contain numerous capillaries that carry warm blood. Wider nostrils are designed to avoid warming air that's already warm.

In people that are from colder climates the nasal openings are narrower (oblong). This allows for the capillaries to come into closer contact with each side, thus warming the cold air.
It should also be noted that people from hotter climates have shorter noses. A shorter nose limits the time air has contact with the warm nasal lining. In contrast people from colder climates have longer noses. This adaptation increases the surface area of the nasal lining and allows the air more space to warm cold air before entering the lungs.

    The lips:

The study of the lips is more vague.
The question "why do Africans have larger lips" is a bit backward considering the first humans had these featires before they left Africa. The scientific way to look at this is chronologically. The question then becomes why did people from cold climates adapt thin lips.
Once some humans left Africa they had to survive a brutal ice age. One common issue that plagues all people in cold weather is chapped lips. Cold dry air will cause cracking and bleeding of the lips. Although this isnt a huge adaptation a cracked lip could possible get infected and possible lead to sickness or even death.
Full lips help to displace heat slightly, however there isnt a huge advantage to this. Some would argue it is a non/less specalized trait opposed to thin lips which was adapted for a specific purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i was looking for such a post, now people in colder place possess with bigger nose which all depends on the altitude they live. I think it also the size of nose is in correlation with the amount of oxygen inhaled.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The question is flawed. Considering everyone is originally from African, The question should be: why do Europeans and people from cold climates develop thinner lips?

Lips thinned and adapted for cold weather to prevent chapping. You can see evidence in this by comparing the people of Northern Asia and Southern Asia. Norther Asians have thinner lips than southern Asians. Even when comparing European populations Nordic people tend to have thinner lips than Mediterranean people.
You can find thin lips in African populations and full lips in European populations (natural diversity) however there is a clear difference due to climate.

  28. A few things come into play here regardless of race; genetics: if your family one side or the other has thin lips you will have thin lips. For example, not all African Americans have big lips. If the family has genetically passed down thin lips regardless of the region you are from and how they got them, you will have thin lips. Why one race has think lips vs another? At one point in time it did matter. Races from the Northern hemisphere had thin lips and more narrow nose for climate conditions but also they had lighter or pale skin better for holding in heat than reflecting it. As races south of the equator had darker skin that managed the heat better and did not burn in the heat, shorter wider noses ideal for hot humid climates like India, Africa and Australia. Today, our lips, hair color, nose size are a matter of DNA aka genetics. Skin color may be influenced by the area you live in and other influences. The majority of the worlds population maintains its color, lips size and nose size from our ancestors with some slight western influence. The why is no longer relevant or even applicable.

  29. This is clearly from a Northern-Eurocentric (Western) perspective. The real question is why do Nordics have such thin, almost non-existant lips. Most people in the World, be they Southern European, Middle Eastern, Sub-Saharan African, Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Brazilian etc. etc. have full lips. Sub-Saharan Africans, Southern Indians and others from hot climates have even fuller lips. The lips of Sub-Saharan Africans and Southern Indians are no more larger from this 'full lips' mean than the Northern Europeans and North Eastern Asians (Northern parts of China, Korean peninsula, Northern parts of Japan) are smaller than this mean.

The climate is the obvious factor that plays a role, however our ignorance only allows us to see that Sub-Saharan Africans have this trait. Further, one could actually argue that the full lips of Sub-Saharan Africans is the default, and anyone who has thinner lips evolved that way to adapt to a harsher (less natural) environment. That is they sacrificed something that was natural as climatic survival was more important. But we don't want to hear that. Moving the pivot point from Northern Europeans to the global mean is one thing, but to move the pivot point to Sub-Saharan Africans makes one an Afrocentric.

  30. My post stated that groups migrated north and others stayed south. You simply restated everything I said. No matter the fancy name you give the group, they migrated north and climate evolved their appearance. We all looked the same at one point.

  31. It doesn’t take long, only a few generations, to develop natural selective changes. However, when humans adapted to their environments, we lost genetic information and we cannot evolve backwards. Africans people’s were introduced to the equatorial climates very early in their natural selective evolution and therefore they had tons of genetic diversity so they adapted completely to the climate. Americans, north and South Americans, all migrated from Asia. They had already adapted to a certain extent to the climate they came from, so when they reached equatorial climes, they had less genetic diversity and so they did not fully adapt with dark skin and wider noses. Lack of genetic diversity is also why you can’t take black people, move them to europe, and turn them white in a few generations. Or vice versa. It’s really so simple, race has nothing to do with it.

  33. I too ended up here as a result of a simple Google search. Why they have fat lips. Where I live there are lots of Black people with large lips. I have read the crazy, silly, stupid and ridiculous responses. Why can't there be ONE SIMPLE ANSWER?
Ok having readd through all this crazy stuff I suddenly thought of another question which I see is related. The same large proportion of these black people (female only) have fat asses. Seems to be related to puberty. Before they are skinny and after they are severely fat assed. I wonder why? Id prefer a scientific reply rather than some location in relation to degrees of latitude. The general lip responses claim it's related to heat. Do they walk around bare assed , blowing hot air out and thus cooling it to prevent climate change?

  34. I'm confused about the lips. Doesn't our skin work to disseminate or retain heat, I.e. sweat glands or hair? Lips are such a small portion of our body when compared to skin surface area. It seems the size of lips is a useless trait when referring to body temperature, especially if air intake \exhale has no relevance to lip size. Am I understanding this explanation correctly? Perhaps the size of facial features evolved to easily ascertain whose tribe one belonged to? Just speculating.

    1. As for the tribe comment, I'm rethinking that. The fact that genes are shared within a tribe obviously make it easier to identity relatives. Not the other way around.

  35. I would also agree with other comments that thinner lips evolved probably to reduce chapping in cold climates. I would also agree that the question is a bit backwards as the fuller lips and nose trait was not the mutation, as we origonated from Africa. I don't, however, agree that this article is racist.

  36. So I'm so confused. I'm from South America, I took a DNA test and my predominant 'race' is Native American. According to that test, I don't have Sub-Saharan African (only North African) nor Southern Indian genetics, then why do I have full lips? I'm so confused by this.
